History

Coventry-based Automotive Trim Developments Ltd (ATD) has grown from a small engineering consultancy offering specialist automotive seat development to a multi-site operation serving customers in varied markets including rail, defence and furniture.   Whilst our primary specialism remains the design and manufacture of seats and interior trim, we also manufacture our own seats for the rail industry.  Still headed up by original founder, Brett Townsend, here is how it all started.

Initially based at Hotchkiss Way, Coventry, ATD was founded as an engineering consultancy specialising in seat development securing our first big order to engineer the foams and seat covers for the Jaguar X-Type.

Having outgrown our first site, ATD moved to new premises in Falkland Close.  These larger premises allowed us to take our first production contract to cut and sew seat covers for an office furniture company.

Continued growth of the company enabled the purchase of an 11,500 sq. ft. industrial unit which allowed ATD to take on more orders.

ATD won the contract with Tesla Motors to supply interior trim for a quantity of 2000 Tesla Roadsters.  This was the first time ATD had worked as a full service supplier supplying complete interiors to sequence.  This year also saw ATD’s move into the defence market with a contract to supply seating for the Jackal fighting vehicle.

Another year for expansion, ATD opened two new manufacturing facilities; one in Fen End near Kenilworth for the manufacture of bespoke seats and trim for the Range Rover and Jaguar XJ Ultimate and a second site in Torrington Avenue for the assembly of military seats and furniture.

ATD combined assembly operations into a new 13,000 sq.ft. facility adjacent to the cut and sew plant providing additional manufacturing capacity in the early part of the year.  This is also the year ATD developed our own UK compliant rail seat and won our first order to supply these seats to Wabtec Rail.

ATD received a major grant from the Regional Growth Fund (RGF).  This enables the company to recruit an additional 12 members of staff following the acquisition of 33,000 sq.ft. of premises next door to the current base in Priory Mill.

ATD acquired a stake in Luzzo Bespoke (www.luzzo.co.uk).  This acquisition broadens the range of products on offer to our customer base. This range now includes picnic hampers, sliding loadspace floors and other high quality accessories.

ATD aquired a majority stakeholding in Luzzo Bespoke with Brett Townsend as Managing Director. This enables the two companies to work more closely together to create innovative product solutions for the luxury automotive sector.
